Is Spearfishing in Cancún Right for You?

Our spearfishing tours in Cancún, Mexico are built for both first-timers and experienced freedivers. You only need to be comfortable swimming and snorkeling in open water. Your guide adjusts the depth and the spot to your level: beginners start on shallow reefs, while experienced divers can work deeper wrecks and ledges.

Spearfishing Rules in Mexico

  • Breath-hold only: in Mexico spearfishing is allowed only while freediving. Using scuba tanks to spearfish is prohibited.
  • Protected areas: spearfishing is not allowed inside national marine parks, so your guide takes you only to areas where it is permitted.
  • Fishing license: a Mexican recreational fishing license is required. Ask us when you book and we will help you arrange it.
  • Lionfish: this invasive species damages the reef, and removing it is encouraged.

Best Season for Spearfishing in Cancún

You can spearfish in Cancún all year. The calmest seas are usually April to June and October to November, which also tends to bring the best visibility. From December to February, cold fronts (nortes) can make the sea rough for a few days at a time, so we keep your dates flexible and reschedule if conditions are not safe. See our month-by-month Cancún fishing calendar for more.

Combine Spearfishing With Sport Fishing

Want a bit of everything? On the Post 46 we troll for mahi-mahi and wahoo on the way out, then anchor near Isla Contoy so part of the group can spearfish while the others jig. It is the best option for mixed groups. Explore all our Cancún sport fishing charters.
