You booked a fishing charter in Cancún and the obvious question comes up: what should I bring? The difference between a comfortable day on the water and one where you get sunburned, seasick or forget something important comes down to preparation. This is our definitive checklist, based on hundreds of trips with real guests.

The Essentials
- Biodegradable sunscreen (SPF 50+). The Caribbean sun is intense and the reflection off the water doubles the burn. Make it reef-safe; some marinas already require it.
- Cap or hat with a brim, ideally with a strap, because the offshore wind is strong.
- Polarized sunglasses. They cut the glare off the water so you can actually see fish, shadows and the real colors of the sea.
- Comfortable quick-dry clothing. No jeans or heavy cotton. Fishing shorts or pants plus a long-sleeve UV shirt; long sleeves protect better than sunscreen.
- Light jacket or windbreaker. The first hours offshore can be cool, especially from November to February.
- Non-slip shoes. Soft-sole sneakers or sport sandals. Never heels, dress shoes or black soles (they mark the deck).
What We Recommend Bringing
- Seasickness pills (Dramamine or similar). Take them 30–60 minutes before departure, even if you think you don’t get seasick. The Caribbean can be choppy.
- A small microfiber towel. Large towels take up too much space.
- Camera or GoPro. Catch moments don’t repeat. Your phone works too, but protect it from salt water with a zip bag.
- Personal snacks if you have dietary restrictions.
- Cash in USD or MXN for tips. 10–15% of the charter price for the captain and crew is customary in Mexico.
- ID or passport.
What You Don’t Need to Bring
- Rods, reels or fishing gear. Professional tackle is included on all our charters.
- Coolers, ice or drinks. We have large coolers on board with water, soft drinks and beer.
- Bait. Included (live bait or lures depending on the trip).
- Fishing license. Included in the price.
- Chairs, umbrellas or boating accessories. The boat has everything.
Golden Tips Before Your Trip
- Avoid hard liquor the night before. Combined with sun and waves, it’s a recipe for seasickness.
- Eat a light breakfast: fruit, bread, yogurt. Skip heavy or greasy food.
- Hydrate well the day before and the morning of the trip.
- Arrive at the marina 15 minutes early. Departures are on time and any delay cuts into your fishing.
- Tell the captain about seasickness, allergies or medical conditions when you board.
Traveling With Kids
If you bring children, add a kid-size life jacket (we have them on board, but very small kids may be more comfortable with their own), small toys or books for slow moments, and extra sun protection. Kids burn faster than adults.
