Month-by-Month Breakdown
January – Best Sailfish Action of the Year
January is one of the prime months to chase sailfish off Isla Mujeres and Isla Contoy. Schools of sardines and ballyhoo concentrate in the area and sailfish follow them. Visibility is great, sea conditions are typically calm, and water temps sit around 78°F. Expect 4–8 sailfish releases in a productive day.
February – Sailfish + Wahoo Combo
Sailfish activity remains strong while wahoo is at peak. February is a quiet tourist month so you get the best of both worlds: prime fishing and easy logistics. Bring a windbreaker — mornings can be cool offshore.
March – Sailfish Closing, Marlin Starting
March is a transition month. Sailfish bite is still strong but the first blue marlin start showing up. If you want a shot at both, March is the month. Mahi-mahi numbers also pick up.
April – Mahi-Mahi and Tuna Surge
The Sargasso seaweed lines start arriving in April, and with them comes mahi-mahi (dorado) in numbers. Tuna runs begin. Marlin activity is building. April is an underrated month — the variety is huge and tourist crowds are still light.
May – Blue Marlin Peak Begins
May kicks off the prime blue marlin season. Big fish (200+ lbs) start showing up off the Yucatán coast. Mahi-mahi continues strong, tuna is in full swing. This is one of the best months overall for Cancún sport fishing.
June – The Big Game Month
If you want a shot at a trophy fish, June is the month. Blue marlin peak, white marlin moving in, mahi-mahi everywhere, and yellowfin tuna at peak. Many of our biggest catches happen in June. Book early — yacht availability gets tight.
July – White Marlin and Tuna
Blue marlin activity stays strong. White marlin peaks. Yellowfin tuna and blackfin tuna are around. July is hot and humid but the fishing is incredible. Light tackle anglers love this month.
August – Marlin Continues, Hurricane Watch
August fishing is still great but be aware: it’s hurricane season. We monitor weather closely and reschedule trips at no charge if conditions are bad. Mahi-mahi, marlin, and tuna are still active.
September – The Quietest Month
September is the slowest fishing month. Marlin tapers, tuna activity drops. Bottom fishing for snapper and grouper is still good. We sometimes recommend pushing your trip to October if your schedule allows.
October – Wahoo and Sailfish Return
By late October, the first wahoo arrives and sailfish start showing up again. Weather stabilizes after the peak hurricane season. Tourism is light, so you get the boat and the fishery to yourself.
November – Sailfish Build-Up
Sailfish numbers grow throughout November. Wahoo is excellent. Mahi-mahi makes a small comeback. Cooler air temps make for very comfortable fishing days.
December – Sailfish + Holiday Season
December is the start of the prime sailfish window. Holiday tourists fill Cancún but if you book early you can still secure great dates. Wahoo bite is excellent, sailfish numbers are climbing toward the January peak.
